Incredible India : Andman and Nicobar chapter

I was sitting at home waiting for my joining date, my husband suggested to not waste this golden opportunity and travel. I had never traveled alone for leisure purposes. The thought of leaving my five year old made me guilty, but I took the chance anyway. Traveling alone in India can be scary because we hear bad news every day so thought of bringing along a friend. Luckily i found a friend who, just like me, wanted to travel and see whatever is there to see. We started searching for all the places where we can go on a budget, just for three days, also, the place which is safe for girls. We ended up booking tickets to Andman and Nicobar. All happened in just four days before the actual travel date :)

Day 1:

We landed at Portblair airport around 3:00, because we had only few days in hand, we had to move fast. In Portblair, we had decided to visit only Celluar jail, also known as 'Kala Pani' . We reached Jail by 3:45 pm. Jail closes at 5:00 pm. It starts getting dark at 5:00 pm in Andman. Jail can be covered in an hour. We had enough time to roam around jail. View from terrace of the Jail is breathtaking. Sky gets all this beautiful hues of pink and orange. One need to be there to experience it.

Post jail, we were off to our bed and breakfast "Horizon view". It was just 6:30 pm, but it felt like 10. We dropped our bags, came out and started looking for nice restaurants for dinner. We stumbled upon this restaurant "Ackshaya". Amazing food and tea. Owner and his wife are such a wonderful couple who went out their way to make our travel easier with all the must do things. I have never seen such an amazing host. We were so happy that we decided that on our last evening at Portblair, we are going to have dinner here.

Day 2:

Day 2 was for Havelock Island, we had decided that we will travel by government ferry, we were scared by taxi people that its hard to get ticket of government ferry because preference is given to islanders. Tip : government ferry can be booked in advance either by going to the counter or through an agent. We decided to try our luck for the earliest ferry which leaves to Havlock at 6:30 am. We reached the counter at 5:30 am. There were not many people, hardly 10, but we did not get ticket to Havlock, instead we got ticket for Neil Island. We booked one way ticket to Neil. We also booked our tickets to Havlock from Neil for the same day, from the same counter. Tip: you can book tickets for different island from the same counter. Government ferry was ok, no blings. Its three times cheaper than the private ferry. We paid somewhere around 500 rs per person for one way ticket. Private ferry costs around 1500-1700 for the same trip. Journey takes 2hours to reach Neil Island.

We reached Neil around 8:30 am. As soon as you reach the island, you will see fruit vendors, auto walas and taxi people. Because we were short on time and had to catch our 1 pm ferry to Havlock, we decided to tour the island by Auto. Tip: negotiation with auto and taxi for the price. We were asked to pay 600 for the auto, we ended up paying 400. Its must, do negotiate for fruits and transportation and whatever you can negotiate on. Neil island is small. We visited Laxmanpur bridge, Laxmanpur beach and Bharatpur beach. If you have time, rent a cycle and cover the island. All the places were beautiful. At Laxmanpur bridge, a guide offered us his services to show us the arch. You cannot see the arch when you reach the beach. We decided to not take the guide and explore on our own. Our auto had already told us the direction to the arch. Very easy hike on rocks gave us the view of beautiful arch. We sat there, took few pictures, upon realizing that the place is full of crabs, we left the place. Those crabs look exactly like rocks, so we did not realize that they were there the whole time.

We ended our Neil island afternoon by having maggi and tea at Bharatpur beach. Saw so many walking conches, it was fun. It was time for our ferry to Havlock. We got at the counter, met this wonderful person who gave his number to gave him call incase we need help. We boarded out ferry to Havlock. Tip:make sure you spend some time looking at the ocean, we saw lots of flying fish. That sight was wonderful.

We reached Havlock by 2:00. Neil to Havlock is just one hour. We rented scooty for 24 hours. Paid 500 rs for the rent of scooty. Reached our Hotel "Placid garden view". With breakfast we paid around 5000 for one night. Its a bit expensive, you get free breakfast, there is hardly wifi, even though hotel mentioned wifi on their site.
Tip:There is network problem on the whole island, be it Portblair, Neil or Havlock, please keep enough cash, you will end up paying cash for everything. Book all your hotels in advance and try to pay for the stay in advance as well.

After unloading our luggage to hotel, we went straight to Radhanagar beach, considered one of the most beautiful beach in Asia. This beach is so serene, best place to watch sunset.

We stayed there for 1 hour, by the time we left Radhanagar beach, it was pitch dark. We almost rode our scooter on a already hit snake and cat. Tip:be careful on the roads, there are not enough street lights, riding on an unknown and new road, can be dangerous.  It was 6 pm and due to dark, we could not go to Kala pathhar beach. We went for a spa, paid 800 for full body massage and ended our day with dinner.

Day 3:

My friend had scuba diving booked for 6 am. We did scuba for 2000 Rs including photos and videos. We are picked from our hotel at 5:45. As per my friend, it was beautiful experience. Our scuba instructor and the person who picked us from hotel, were both amazing. We were done by 7:30 am. Had breakfast at hotel, left luggage at hotel and left for elephant beach. You can reach this beach either by trekking or by ferry. Ferry charges 900 rs one way while trekking need to be done with a guide who charges 500 rs. We were ready to hike, its 1.8 km one way. We did not realize that it's going to be one of hardest trek we had done in past. Because of rain, it was all mud, knee deep mud and we had to trek in that.

It was very difficult, slippery. Fortunately we were able to do it without falling down a single time, with help of our wonderful guide. We started our trek around 10 am, reached beach at 11 pm. Its very small yet very beautiful beach. You can do all sorts of water sports here. I did snorkeling and i still have the image of the beautiful marine life i saw, in front of my eyes. If you had skipped scuba, please do snorkeling here. You will not imagine what you will miss seeing. It was such a wonderful experience. I paid 1000 rs for snorkel. I would have negotiated for the price but we were so tired after the trekking, we gave up and accepted whatever they offered. We swam for some time in the crystel clear green water, took pictures and trekked back to the base.

We picked our luggage, returned our scooty, boarded the government ferry and sat in front part of the upper deck. It was beautiful, soon we were joined by a lot of people.

It was nice to see people chatting, small kids dancing. Ferry was playing old hindi songs. Soon it was dark, you can only see stars, thousands of stars. That site has seized into my mind. We docked after two hours, went straight to hotel de pebbles, had dinner at Ackshaya as we had decided on our first day. Their cook has amazing talent, we had gobhi manchurian, butter roti and their speciality, corm methi malai. It was delicious. I had my flight early in the morning. As I was leaving for airport at 6 am from the hotel, the receptionist gave me a parcel with sandwich in it. I felt so grateful as they did not have to do that. I have become their lifetime guest.

Our beautiful trip ended with wonderful memories.

My tribute to Lakers

I never heard about NBA in my life let alone watch it on TV before May year 2010.When I was in India and my husband, that time fiance , was in USA, he used to tell me about his interest in basketball with full excitement, I used to ask myself Is this my fiance who is stupid or Is this the game, I mean who watches basketball. That time I was untouched with the charisma of Kobes, Garnets, Rondos, Allens, Wades and Pierce.

Last year when I came here in January, It was all about roaming and discovering this new place until May with the start of playoffs.I was forced to watch NBA as with remote in my husband hands nothing much I could do except bearing those big american players running from basket to basket on my TV Screen. You can't imagine how boaring those 4 quarters were for me as I didn't understand the A B C of NBA.

My stubborn husband never left a chance of feeding my head with 3 pointers, 24 sec time, paint area, 4 quarters and yes ofcourse Lebron James, his favourite player.

As all the teams in payoffs had to play best of 7 series against their opponents, it was pretty frustrating for me as every night there was some match going on and I am watching those players making jump shots but somehow those slam dunks caught my attention and I started taking interest in the game when the series reached the finale.

There were two teams Los Angles Lakers and Boston Celtics fighting to become champions of the year 2010. Lakers were the defending champions that time. My interest grew with the Lakers and by the time they reached game 3 , I was all for Lakers, then they lost both game 4 and game 5 on the road , it was like they not going to bounce back but when they came back on their home grounds, they were a different team alltogether. They played like champions. Kobe was their start and he shined like one.

Lakers were champions for last two years and like any other Lakers fan me too was 100% sure to see them in final this year but all my hopes got stolen by Dallas Mavericks who showed such a fantastic basketball today by sweeping Lakers by 4-0.

When it was 5:06 left on clock and Lakers were behind by 30 points , I was still praying to God for some miracle. Nothing happened and Lakers lost and so are the hopes of fans who wanted to see them winning those rings again, fans who wanted to Kobe to win that ring to match the record of Michael Jeffrey Jordan.

I am upset as I won't be able to see them palying anytime before October this year and also by that time this team will be changed. I am sure there will be new faces. Kobe Bryant, Pau Gasol, Ron Artest, Derek Fisher, Andrew Bynum-this was the team I fell in love with and I don't think I will ever see them playing together again. I wish you could have win again this timefor me and for more than thousands of fans across the globe.

I love you Lakers and will love you forever as you were my first love in basketball. Will miss you :(

P.S- I am upset but my hopes are still alive with Boston Celtics on the floor. All the best :)

My one day long friend

Came from nowhere, a bird
at my window, one day
That bird was white
With black mark on her neck,
as she wearing a necklace

Her little shiny eyes
That innocence on her face
Staring at me straight in my eyes
As she wanted to talk
But how we going to talk
She blink, I blink and we know

Like she got all the time in the world
Free, careless bird
I fels as she was in search of me
like her, me too in no hurry

Me sitting at this end of the window
She at the other
Staring at each other for sometime

I think of giving my new guest something to eat
She starts eating rice given by me
Me too in my zone grab my pack of chips
"Will be back with water", I say to the bird
Filling small pot with water, I come
and see
Bird was gone without saying "Will come back again"

Bread on the run

Date:16th April' 2010 Weston, Florida

Yesterday while having a chit-chat with my brother over phone, he asked "What are you up to? Join some course otherwise you gonna forget everything you studied". Oh my God ! these type of discussions make me sad.

Hey wait wait wait !! Did i tell you about myself? No? You must be kidding. Well, here I am. A girl who studied computers, having experience of 2 yrs in the field of computers, got married just 4 months back, left India as my husband works here in Florida. And what I do now a days? Well this is an interesting question, which i answer like this - "come on i cook yar". And what I cook? The same daal (pulses), roti (bread), sabji (vegetables)? Hummm... YES, NO... NO, YES... you got it?

I am trying my hand on new dishes like today I made or rather I say un-covered my first dish, which I happliy named "Bread on the run", got picture of it and soon i am going to paste it on my orkut account .

You know what? Most of the things that I do for example, parasailing, rafting and blah blah, it's just for the sake of orkut. After all, I can paste picture of things and make my close friends jealous. Ha Ha Ha, otherwise these adventure things are not my cup of tea. Anyway, that's a different story.

It's been just three months here in Florida, on dependent visa, so not working. What I do everyday is just sleep, eat, read , sleep, lots of movies and ya of course I cook. Actually it's not just, but almost just. Everyone asks, "How do you pass your time?", and my father and brother who are really concerned about my career always give me this thoughtful magical sentences "What you gonna do in life?" I always get tensed hearing all these things and like always I go to my husband (who is the sweetest person on this earth) and ask him the same question, "What am I doing? What should I do?" Then he makes a fun of me and then we talk for at least 2 hours discussing my career prospectives. Well, this career discussions happens two times a month. And fun part is everytime, we discuss this, next day, I start with a new thing.

The first time, I discussed my career with my husband, I said hey I want to be a photographer (influenced by "Wake up Sid"). He said alright and bought me a camera. But I must tell you the camera got more pictures of mine than anything else. Actually I understood that I love getting clicked, so I thought of modelling but I am too old for that...

The second career option, I discussed with my husband was "Painter/cartoonist". So he bought colors and charts and sheets, and some art books from library. I made three cartoons (just faces), and a chart which is still not completed. Well, it seems hihgly unlikely that I'll touch the colors and brushes again in near future.

Then I was just thinking of becoming dancer (thanks to "Dance India dance" and the movie "Take the lead"). But now that thought is also vaporized with my new interest, "Un-covering the art of cooking in my own style". Yes, I will be a cook. No matter what if I watched "Julie and julia" last night, and you know what I just had un-covered my first dish and I am gonna name it "Bread on the run". Well, I told you this already, but just though of reminding you about my achievement. Yum, Yum. Now then, what next?

Well, its enough for today folks; have to cook dal chaval (rice) for lunch. Meet you very soon and write here as soon as I un-cover something else.

Somewhere between rasmalai and rabree

Hi Guys. How you all have been?
I told my husband yesterday to surprise me on my birthday.Did i tell you that my birthday is due coming weekend?No?.Ok.I will celebrate my birthday this Sunday.Hurray and as my husband, who just can't keep any secret from me so there is no scope of surprises on my birthday so I just thought to advice him that he can give me a surprise on my birthday.Isn't this a good idea? For your information guys i have already bought one dress,2 tops as my birthday gift from him but i don't consider these things as my birthday gifts as you know a birthday gift is one that you gets on your Birthday itself.Ha Ha. Oh my god I am so self obsessed with myself that I don't find myself any near writing about rasmalai(Desert made up of milk). Its like that today this topic will be more about my birthday(which is still a few days away) than anything else.OK OK.No more birthday talks.

So guys for last few days or say after I wrote my last topic "Bread On the run" several things kept me busy. What things you will ask now?Answer is cooking most of those things. We had two guests to come home last Sunday.I was about to make "Mushroom do pyaza(one main course dish made up of Mushroom)","Rajma-Chawal(Kidney beans and rice)","Poori" and for desert "Rasmalai" as its my favourite. As Sunday morning was about to take all my time making vegetables and "poori" so i thought to make "Rasmali" one day in advance.

It was Saturday night 10:30 pm and i started making my desert. My husband was playing games on computer.I was stirring the milk.stirring and staring, stirring and staring.Half of the things were done by 12 am but still half left.By the time my husband had already forcefully tasted half of the things and he was still wanting to taste more.I always shout on him saying "Just eat this whole thing even before its cooked" and for you information he starts eating and then laughing. You need no talks just action to make him go away.anyway.He was gone and me still on with the left portion. This time stirring the milk harder. My desert was ready by 1:00.I didn't taste it then.Placed it in the bowl and kept in refrigerator for cooling.

If you ask me the recipe i will say "Its very simple.take milk, divide it into 2 parts.Simple? then make half of the milk to boil on low heat(like the anger blow in your mind when your husband starts snoring in night) and lime water into the other half when its properly boiled.Make cheese of this lime added milk and thereafter make small balls of this cheese while let the other half still be boiling till it becomes half. Well by the way why I am telling you the recipe?.This is not a recipe blog.Go to google and youtube for the recipe guys. You will get better one.Because the way i am telling it will come out something else at the end.Like mine.

Mine Desert tasted good but it had no taste of Rasmalai. It was somewhere between rasmalai and rabree. But guys result was sweet. You know God is giving me this sign.I can hear him saying "My child you are going to be different in the field of cooking, keep going" Ha Ha.See you later guys.

Born Apetite.

Just Like That

"Hold your tears,
coz nobody gonna stop you.
Don't wait just don't wait,
coz nobody gonna show up to you."
"Its not that nobody loves you.
Its more like everybody has reunited to make you strong,
to make you take your own decisions,
to fight you from your own fears,
to make you feel complete without anyone."
"You cried a lot,you need to calm down,
coz sumone out there waiting for you.
Someone waiting for your smile,
so that he can smile.
Someone wating for your hand
to have your support."
Your tears are breaking down that someone,
so just hold them for a while..."
"Just hold them...till he fall asleep.
Just hold them...till he walks away.
Till he has picture of you smiling in his eye."
"Baby don't cry...
coz he will cry along"
